Vi avbryter denne bloggen med en ekstra nyhetssending

På vei til byen i dag, havnet vi plutselig midt oppi et kjempeoppbud av pansrede politifolk, hunder, politibiler og ambulanser. Minst 20 politifolk var på plassen, og publikum ble bryskt anmodet om å "move along". (Ikke at vi var tungbedt altså; vi skulle uansett bare krysse plassen.)

Gaten var full av knust glass, og alle tegn pekte mot en alvorlig hendelse. Siden vi hadde med oss ungene, ønsket vi naturlig nok å komme oss forbi uten at de skulle observere noe ubehagelig og hastet videre.

Jeg var selvsagt nysgjerrig på hva oppstyret dreide seg om. (Dette var like ved postkontoret, så ran var min første innskytelse. Overfall og drap var også alternativer som ikke virket utenkelig.)

Rioting Hull City fans barricade themselves in York city centre pub

DOZENS of riot police sealed off part of York City centre today after up to 50 Hull City fans barricaded themselves in a pub. Officers in full riot gear, accompanied by dogs, surrounded Lendal Cellars in St Helen's Square.

Shoppers and diners were trapped in nearby shops and restaurants, while hundreds of people watched from behind police tapes as the drama unfolded.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the trouble began when the Hull fans, whose team are playing York City in a friendly match this afternoon, arrived in York by train and went to the Punchbowl Wetherspoon's pub at the top of Micklegate.

He said they then clashed with some York fans and police were called, but the Hull supporters then made their way to Lendal Cellars, where they hurled bottles into St Helen's Square before taking over the bar and barricading themselves in.

Police later marched 40 to 50 chanting fans over Lendal Bridge to take them back to the railway station.
